Dr. Arthur Chester is the former CEO of HRL Laboratories, formerly known as Hughes Research Laboratories, in Malibu, California. HRL is a leading research and development laboratory in information sciences and electronic systems, and is presently co-owned by Boeing and General Motors. Dr. Chester is recognized as a pioneer in laser technology, and as an authority in the field of Technology Management. He headed HRL from 1988 through 2002. From 1988 through 1997, he also served as Senior Vice President, Research and Technology, for Hughes Electronics and a member of its Office of the Chairman. Dr. Chester received a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1965. He periodically serves as a consultant to the U.S Department of Defense, and also serves on PortBlue's Board of Advisors.
Paul Dimitruk Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Paul Dimitruk is the Chief Executive Officer of PortBlue Corporation, based in Los Angeles. PortBlue develops and hosts expert systems for business and government applications, primarily in the healthcare and homeland security.
Paul is the Chairman and Co-Founder of Partners Capital Group Limited, based in London and Boston. Partners Capital provides investment management to the partners of leading global professional, consulting and private equity firms and university endowments. Paul is also the Chairman of Hawker Capital in London, a manager of global commodities based investment strategies.
Prior to founding PortBlue, Paul was Chairman and Co-Founder of Pareto Partners from 1991 through 2001 and was its Chief Executive from 1993 through 1999. Pareto is an institutional investment management firm based in London and is the largest currency risk management firm in the world, with over $40 Billion in managed exposures. Pareto's investment strategies were based on proprietary, quantitative software models and artificial intelligence technology in the form of Knowledge Based Systems, including systems co-developed with Hughes Electronics.
Prior to becoming CEO of Pareto, Paul was Group Managing Director of General Atlantic Group Limited, a private company with major interests in a diverse range of businesses in North America, the Far East, and Europe. Prior to General Atlantic, he was an Executive Director and member of the Management Committee of INVESTCORP, the international investment bank. At INVESTCORP Paul was involved in private equity investing and was the firm's principal representative on the Boards of the companies in which it invested. Before joining INVESTCORP, Paul was the Partner-in-Charge of the London and Paris offices of Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher, a leading global law firm headquartered in Los Angeles.
Paul is a member of the Private Sector Advisory Group to the Department of Homeland Security and an associate member of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers. He has been a member of the Advisory Board of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, the World Economic Forum and the Young Presidents Organization (London Chapter).
Mr. Dimitruk holds a B.A. with High Honors from Denison University, where he is a member of the Board of Trustees, and a Juris Doctor degree from New York University. He is a member of the Bar (Inactive) of California and Ohio.
Paul has four sons. Two are on active duty in the United States Marine Corps and one in the United States Navy.
Mr. Jerome is the Senior Vice President and Large Cap Growth Portfolio Manager at Alliance Capital. Before joining Alliance's Cleveland office in 1986, Mr. Jerome was affiliated for three years with William M. Mercer, Inc., with responsibility for marketing and delivery of employee benefit and investment consulting services. Prior to his experience with Mercer, Mr. Jerome was a Vice President with Huntington Banks, where he was Manager of Institutional Trust Administration and Investment Management Marketing. Mr. Jerome holds a B.A. in Economics from Denison University and received his M.B.A. from Case Western Reserve University.
Jane Kirkland brings senior-level experience in both knowledge management and e-commerce to PortBlue. From July 1999 to September 2000, Jane was a member of the executive team at FreeMarkets, Inc. where she served first as Vice President and Chief Information Officer, and then as Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. Prior to joining FreeMarkets, Jane spent 11 years at McKinsey and Company. From 1988-1993, Jane was an associate in McKinsey's Cleveland/Pittsburgh office where she provided services for both financial institutions and industrial companies. In 1993 she was elected Partner, and served in this position in Cleveland/Pittsburgh until 1997, when she became McKinsey's Director of Knowledge Management. In this role, Jane was responsible for McKinsey's knowledge management technology platform and its community of over 600 knowledge management professionals in over 35 countries. Throughout her career at McKinsey, Jane was active in both the Strategy Practice and the Financial Institutions Practice.
Prior to joining McKinsey, Jane was a Senior Software Engineer at Lockheed Sanders where she worked on defense electronics systems.
Jane graduated from Smith College (cum laude) with High Honors in English. She also holds an MAT in English from Brown University and an MS in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. Jane received her MBA with Highest Distinction from the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College where she was a first-year Tuck Scholar. Jane currently serves on the board of the Carnegie Science Center and on the MBA Advisory Board at Tuck.
Bill served as Executive Vice President and CFO of PortBlue from its July 2000 founding until July 2002. He has been a CEO, COO and CFO of manufacturing, distribution and service companies for over 25 years. His skills include rapid growth management, merger integration, company restructuring, crisis management, mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance including IPOs. His industry experience includes healthcare, foods aerospace, apparel, construction, energy and electronics.
Bill currently serves as interim CFO of American Specialty Health, Inc., the leading complementary healthcare company in the United States. ASH is rapidly expanding with increasing consumer demand for its clinical, wellness and fitness services. Previously he was an interim executive at Arcus Enterprises, the diversification subsidiary of WellPoint, Inc., developing and investing in healthy living, healthcare financing and international health insurance businesses.
Earlier, Bill was the Senior Vice President of Edison Enterprises, a subsidiary of Edison International. He was responsible for merger integration, the CFO function and the acquisition/divestiture program. Edison Enterprises' diversified services included residential security services and supermarket equipment repair and installation.
He has worked in numerous companies while serving in the interim management and consulting practices of KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers and XRoads Business Solutions. Bill received his MBA from Harvard Business School and his BA with Distinction from Stanford University. He served aboard a U. S. Navy destroyer in Vietnam.
Stan Miranda is the Chief Executive and founder of Partners Capital Investment Group, an international investment advisor to the partners of leading private equity, professional and consulting firms, other high net-worth individuals and endowments. Prior to forming Partners Capital, Stan served as Director and Manager of the European Operations of Evolution Global Partners, an international venture capital company owned by Kleiner Perkins, Texas Pacific Group and Bain & Company from January 2000 through December 2001.
Previously, he was a Director at Bain & Company where he advised leading private equity firms and the senior management of large multinational corporations for 18 years. He served on the Bain Private Equity Practice and Private Equity Investment Committee and was a member of the worldwide Executive Committee (Chairman in 1997-98).
Stan is a Certified Public Accountant and holds an MBA from Harvard University.
Janey Place is a private consultant and until recently was Executive Vice President of eCommerce Strategy for Mellon Financial Corporation. She was responsible for Mellon's eCommerce strategy, customer information management, and is co-president of MellonLab. She also was a member of Mellon's Senior Management Committee.
Before joining Mellon, Janey was founder and CEO of DigitalThinking.com, an eCommerce and payment systems consulting company. She was, also the executive vice president for Bank of America's Strategic Technology group, which was responsible for Internet initiatives, advanced technology research and development, and information technology architecture. Previously, Ms. Place was senior vice president in charge of Internet strategy, research and development at Wells Fargo Bank. She was information technology manager at Hughes Aircraft Company and served as corporate manager of Strategic Technology Planning for Tosco Corporation. Ms. Place also was a lecturer in systems and communication theory at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Ms. Place earned a bachelor's degree from the University of California at Los Angeles. She holds a master's degree and a doctorate in systems theory and attended the Graduate School of Management at UCLA.
Retired Lieutenant General Emil R. "Buck" Bedard served over 37 years in active duty for the US Marine Corps.
Commissioned as a second lieutenant on December 1, 1967, General Bedard served as a commander and officer of multiple units in the Republic of Vietnam. As a captain, he served as an instructor in various institutions in Quantico, Virginia. Subsequent promotions to lieutenant colonel, colonel, and then brigadier general took him around the world on assignments with organizations such as NATO and operations such as Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Somalia. Following these assignments and command as a major general over 2d Marine Division and II Marine Expeditionary Force, Bedard was promoted to lieutenant general on July 25, 2000. As a lieutenant general, Bedard assumed the duties as the Deputy Commandant for Plans, Policies, and Operations, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, Washington, D.C. before retiring on December 1, 2003.
General Bedard graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1967. In addition to holding a M.S. degree, General Bedard's formal military education includes the U.S. Army Advanced Infantry Course in 1973, Armed Forces Staff College in 1980, and Army War College in 1986. His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (with gold star in lieu of 2d award), Bronze Star (with Combat V), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with 18 Strike/Flight awards, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with Combat V and 2 gold stars in lieu of subsequent awards), Army Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon.
Mark Auburn brings over 19 years of experience in development and management of software and Internet-based applications with numerous start-up companies.
Mark has served as the Chief Technology Officer for several Internet start-ups, creating a technology strategy and organization for applications as diverse as medical administrative services and on-line marketing for high-end professionals. Mark was the Vice President, Development and Chief Information Officer for PayMyBills.com, an idealab! Internet start-up that offered electronic bill presentment and won a Forbes "Best of the Web" award.
Mark was also Vice President, Technology for Investment Technology Group Inc. and built Web-based electronic commerce systems to handle client orders of up to $24 billion per day. ITG was a pioneer in technology-driven equity trading, growing from a startup in 1991 to an IPO in 1994 with over $200 million in revenues in 1998. He also served at Inference Corporation, a leading developer of artificial intelligence software, which pioneered the commercial application of numerous tools from computer science research, including rule-based programming, knowledge engineering and case-based reasoning.
Mark has an MS in Computer Science from Stanford University and an MBA from the Anderson School at UCLA. He also has a BS/BA in Computer Science/Mathematics (magna cum laude) from Duke University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his third and final year.
